 Billy and the Sideburnzz

Rockabilly Man EP

(KEIL Records)

The fewer the instruments, the greater the responsibility of extant players to make each moment spectacular. This spartan trio makes the most of lean arrangements and the dynamism possible in flat-out, headlong bop.

Recommended: "Rockabilly Man," "Big Blue Eyes, "Give Me A Call," "Tease Me (A Little)"

 Outsider! Escape From Berlin

(Wolverine)

Brusque punks get fixed-up by turgid pit. Material slams skulls. Merits rapt regard, "motherfuckers."

Recommended: "She's In Love With The Avenue," "I Won't Say No," "Time Flies When You're Having Fun," "You Created A Monster," "Rep To Protect," "California," "Anaconda"

Shake The Tree

(Western Star)

Pat and pals handily dispense mannerly honky tonk that all but bursts with sunbeams. Happy out loud. World-wise, too.

Recommended: "Shake The Tree," "Since 1962," "I Told You," "Gene Hunt," "Roll The Dice," "Until I Dream," "I Don't Need You (And You Don't Need Me)," "The Third Earl Of Harrow"

Back In The Day:

Screaming Lord Sutch

Rock & Horror (Ace)

Not the iconic 1960s tracks produced by Joe Meeks, but early '80s ones overseen by the primeval monster-man, himself. And there are Sutch-authored numbers here that deserve great story. At once lunar stalker and rock'n'roll shouter, he was without equal.

Recommended: "Screem & Screem," "All Black & Hairy," "Jack The Ripper," "Rock & Shock," "Murder In The Graveyard," "London Rocker," "Rockabilly Madman," Oh Well," "Loonabilly," "Go Berry Go"
