Dawn Shipley and the Sharpshooters
"Shoulda Known Better" (Shot O' Clock)

Dawn doesn't merely sing old-ways, hand-tooled, step-lively country rockabilly, she lives in these songs. She welcomes all who step 'round her porch with a bucolic easiness that encourages, ingratiates, and ultimately elates.

Recommended "Mad About You," "Shoulda Known Better," "Don't Want Your Lies," "Your Only Gal," "Voodoo You," "That's the Way I Feel"

Billy Hancock with Charlie Feathers
"Havin' a Rockabilly Rave Up!" (Turkey Mountain)

Pivotal players from rockabilly's 50s Southern genesis and 70s reappearance remind of the deep familial bond between real rural country and its more animated, pick-'em-up-and-put-'em-down kid cousin. Alive with a spirit unaging.

Recommended "I Wanna Boogie," "Do It If You Wanna" "We're Too Much Alike To Like Each Other Like We Used To Do," "Rootie Tootie," "Defrost Your Heart"

The Twang-O-Matics
"Rock Havoc!" (Hack Shack Records)

Stoics in black crash in on a wild Norwegian surf, jam-packing their wordless, meticulously picked message with sinister vibe, darkest jungle-evocative pulses, eccentric airs from an unknown distant planet, and rousing Morricone horn expostulations.

Recommended "Payback," "La Pachuca," "Ms. Anna Conda," "Twenty Past Eleven," "Death Grip"

Del Lords
"Elvis Club" (Megaforce)

Following a hiatus of some two decades, the sanctified believers from NY in 2013 released this, their sixth disc. As before, they offered the dual assets of guitar riff-conscious rock 'n' roll in the bloodline of storied testifiers passed and the intimate, fire escape real life narratives of Scott Kempner. Mature wisdom earned through years has its valuable say. And the title bespeaks of-the-faith awareness. Solid. True.

Recommended "When the Drugs Kick In," "Chicks, Man," "You Can Make a Mistake One Time," "Everyday," "Me and the Lord Blues," "Damaged," "Letter (Unmailed)"

Johnny Nightmare
"Psychobilly Scarecrow" (Crazy Love Records)

The house is shaking.

Over there. It's coming from behind the basement door. Furious rock 'n' roll with an evil razor edge. Swinging back that door, you're nearly knocked flat by a tremendous onrush of guitar-led storm.

Battling down rickety, age-gnawed wooden stairs, cobwebs all about, you stare, stunned, as a hanging bulb below swings crazily, its stark glare jerk-dancing in epileptic
rage against dullish grey stone walls.

They're in the corner. Are they men or monsters?

The answer is both.

Recommended "Vampire In the Sun," "Psychobilly Scarecrow," "Bloody Nightmare," "Holiday In Hell," "Dagger Love," "Surfing the Hell-Gap"

The Bones
"Flash the Leather" (People Like You)

As much brutally slam-bang action as would be hoped for in a punk onslaught, though with judicious melodic ear and an exactly measured dose of catchiness. You can stage dive and yowl assent.

Recommended "New Hooligans (0909099)," "Monkeys With Guns," "Die Wilden Jahre," "The Compadres," "Chainsaw," "Salute the Remote"

Rockabilly Gangsters
"Let's Rockin' Again" (sixtyninecats)

Kingly imprint is most often found in gentle, balladic moments, though outright rockin' of spring-heeled personality bounds with good humor. Pleasant, engaging Indonesian bop.

Recommended "Little Angel," "Boom Bam Boom," "Rockin' Chain"
