For Dancers Only: Primal Beats From the Basement
(Stag-O-Lee)
Since 2004, Dublin collector Bill Kealey, 7" vinyl case clutched in hand, has made the club rounds and delighted patrons hungry for vintage Blues and R&B. Some tracks here incorporate Blues-harp accentings. Others leave openings for white-hot plank-spanking. All are raw. Unneedful of the technical artifice upon which manufactured successors now depend, players' abilities proclaim themselves. Mercy.
Recommended: "She's Gone" (Schoolboy Cleve), "Wear Your Black Dress" (Willie Egans), "Rhythm Rockin' Boogie" (John Lee), "Finally Met My Baby" (Lightnin' Hopkins and Ruth [Blues] Ames), "It Must Have Been the Devil" (Otis Spann), "I'm Lookin' For a Woman" (Little Hudson), "You Drink Too Much Booze" (Jimmy Raney and Slim Slaughter), "Pack Up" (Gladys Tyler)
