It would be tempting to characterize these songs as brisk marriages of melody and horsepower, but to do so would imply the qualities were once separate. So one are they, that one suspects union has always been the case. There's just enough Pop sensibility making merry here to lift material above its forcibleness unto tons of fun passion. ("Rolling Stone" nods in the direction of "Manic Depression;" Jimi's inspiration also imprints elsewhere.)
