Graveyard Mutants

Afterlife Love Machine

(Crazy Love Records)

Like directors of vintage fright movies, these fiends contrive to establish sinister atmosphere. They do so by maintaining a middle-ranged tempo that heightens dramatic tension and with a starkness that recalls early Psycho. A lesser trio would founder whereas this robust one murders, its measured onslaught effectively underscoring ghoulish tellings. Monster-credibility is further affirmed when "Bloodlust's" lycanthropic protagonist repeatedly intones the cautionary formulation featured in Universal's Larry Talbot prowls.

This 4-track 7" vinyl EP is numbered and available in five colors.

Alergija

Novi Počeci

(PDV Records)

When Alergija formed in 1994, per lore, Croatia's Punk scene boasted scant booted outfits. Such vaccuum proved conducive to germination, and the anthemic street Oi! they churn in 2024 is the cracking product. As hypersonic buzz-chords are ground out to doomsday poundings and bellowings ricochet, walls fall all around.

Le Flash Boum!! Beat

(Jukebox Music Factory)

Vibrant, bouncy organ-playing is splashed across many of these 1960s French pop pipings. High-stepping percussion, fuzz-guitar inventiveness, and brass sections whose pumpings flock skyward further impel these groovy cinematic-feeling tunes. (One envisions tilted shots of scooters racing along brick boulevards). It matters not if one doesn't suss French; the singers' projections convey universally diggable jollity.

Recommended: "Flash" (Jean Paul Mauric), "On Court" (Cleo), "Mefie-Toi du H. Bourill" (Les Sharks) "Tao-By" (Tao-By), "Glip Glap" (Trio Brasseur), "Je Bois Trop" (Jose Salcy), "Dis Moi Pourquoi tu refuses" (Thierry Vincent), "Mon père est millionaire" (Les Mystics), "Les Minets de la Plage" (Henri Genés et Jean Lefèvre), "Mon Homme a les cheveux longs" (Annie Duparc), "Bahamas 70 m_m" (Christian Gauber)

Linda Gail Lewis and Danny B. Harvey

"Baby, Please Don't Go" single

(Cleopatra)

Since its 1935 waxing, Delta Bluesman Joe Williams' classic has been revisited by countless admirers of disparate fashion. This latest iteration smolders with intensity. Rockabilly Hall Of Fame cynosure Linda emotes earthily, as only she can. The decisiveness with which she declares demands attention. Strapping and formidable Blues-rocking of vintage aspect asserts itself , jaw jutted and laced with the six-string lightning-strikes for which Danny has long been acclaimed.

Dead End

(Svart Records)

Denmark's hardcore mileau produced this fist. Singer Salomon Segar raves with full-lunged wrathfulness, while his bandmates unleash turbulence teetering on cacophony's edge. Dead End's 12 cuts all rage at dangerously high speed (there being no rest for the ravening). Oh, the pit-brawls this surely provokes.

Kemenangan Cinta Sang Perompak

(Netrilis Music)

More passion and guitar tension than are generally found in Pop creations, but of greater melodicism and vocal sophistication than regulation Punk embodies. The truism that tunefulness and voltage are not mutually exclusive fills the air.

Back In the Day, 1982

Johnny Seaton

Uptown

(Renegade Records)

Uptown was a remarkably feral production of the early 1980s Rockabilly resurgence. Producer Billy Poore wisely united Johnny, an Elvis impersonator of prodigious facility, with a band that featured Maryland fireballs Danny Gatton and Evan Johns. Given that combustible combination, and the selection of superior genre material, the LP busted wide with torridness (including on occasional slow-burners).

An impressed Washington Post reviewer pronounced that Johnny sang Rockabilly with "unconstrained lowbrow enthusiasm," possessed a "bright, unafraid voice," and seemed "less concerned with being historically hip than with someday owning his own pink Cadillac."

A somewhat more contemporary sound was pursued on 1986 follow-up Reaction (Rounder), which also spotlighted Gatton. In ensuing years, the tempestuous singer returned to impersonating the King, including at MGM's Las Vegas hotel and in his own touring company. He also appeared with Donny Osmond in the stage show Joseph and the Technicolor Dreamcoat.

Today, Johnny leads Bad Behavior in maintaining the flame that consumed the planet.
