Rafael Espinoza and
the Rockabilly Railroad
At Sun Studio
(Rafael Espinoza Music)
No fiberglass simulation, but impressive modifications on the classic template. Rockabilly so real. Fun so unbound. And Rafael's chops are of the same class as marquee names decades his senior.
Recommended: "Hot Rod Hillbillies," "Rockabilly Railroad," "The Sky Belongs To the Stars," "Darla Jean," "3:10 To Memphis," "Hey Bill Jr," "Cool Cats and Hot Wheels," "Tupelo Tornado"

Fish'n Creepers
The Evil Dead (Dead By Dawn)
(O Beco Estudio De Gravacao)
Bloodshot eyeballs searching the night, claws ready and fangs snapping, it prowls after screaming sustenance. Those trembling souls fortunate enough to have escaped its primordial rage whisper desperate cautions.
But maddened acolytes whirl and crash.

The Bottletones
Alone and Rollin' (self)
With great stockpiles of creativity -- far too much to respect any solitary genre's demarcations -- the Bottletones fire equally estimably in multifarious aspects. And they impressively meet each demand.
Recommended: "Midnight and Six," "Cold," "T-Shirt of a Latin Bad Ass," "The Wolf," "I Got a Sense," "The Malloys," "A Thousand Roads." "Let's Ride," "See You Next Tuesday," "Hammerhead," "The Dark"

Coffin Draggers
Cemetery Gates single track
(self)
One fetching component of Dee Dee Ramones' songwriting was his unionizing of buoyant melody and crushing dispatch. (One fine example: "Locket Love.")
In similar manner, the Coffin Draggers burst upward from monster-man psycho-soil to shout in anthemic exhortation.
An early Ramones-observer in Creem characterized that band thusly: "as light on their feet as a mayonnaise-tidal wave."
That's an apt descriptor here, as well.

The SideBurners
Once Again...Vol 2
(Brent Cashman / Boc Design, Inc)
It's pretty cool, when you think about it: Strapping rock and roll as adept at turn-on-dime stutter-stepping as stomps of the kaboom variety, and all raised up by four guys hip to the tip.
Recommended: "Once Again," "Down the Line," "She'll Tear Your Heart Out," "Trying To Get Over You," "Dead Boyfriend," "Love Faded Away," "Take Me Back"

The Swamp Shakers
Don't Wanna Miss b/w Shake It!
(self)
The compact "Don't Wanna Miss" cruises agreeably, its briskness and amiable melody certain magnets. "Shake It" is of much the same character, though in higher gear. Both benefit from clean vocals and dedicated instrumentation. And each throws a solid
punch that connects.
