The Brains

No Brain, No Pain

(Cleopatra)

With their 2005 maiden platter, leathery Rene, Colin the Dead, and Phil the Beast tipped quiffs as among Psychobilly's fastest and loudest wrecking locomotives. Simultaneously entering were unsettling Creature-featurism vibes and screamed asylum declarations. The volatile admixture can and does explode. Realities splinter into technicolor mayhem. Cleopatra reissued No Brain, No Pain in 2023 for the benefit of all hungering to hear a blast furnace ripped from cellar flooring and heaved with perilous ambition.

Recommended: "No Brain, No Pain," "Black Jack Death Bet," "Taste Your Blood," "Train (Keeps A-Rollin' On)," "Don't Wanna," "Crazy Paradise," "Murcielagos" (bonus cut)

The Brains

"Vampire Zombies from Space"   digital single

(Cleopatra)

Theodore Bezaire wrote, directed, and produced the 2025, mock '50s drive-in antic of this name. "What a cool and unexpected piece inspired by our film," began Theodore's appraisal of the night-prowling Brains' crispest. " When we were making the film, we never imagined that there would be a song and music video created for it. And it's even cooler that Rene is a fellow Canadian. Amazing work!"

As Brains' label Cleopatra also markets the film, it's not implausible that label execs suggested Rene and cohorts craft a commercial lure. But, even should that be the case, Rene may already have been no less a fan of Poverty Row monster flickers as any amongst us. (Whilst in formative phase, he may have spent numerous late nights awash in television-beamed monster rallies. This writer did.) Best to cast down cynical suspicions and appreciate the song for what it is: A union of saucer antics native to the Plan 9 niche, and undeniably disarming Psycho that makes acolytes of listeners from planets both familiar and uncharted.

PS. The endearingly schlocky B&W film's Dracula reminds a tad of Zandor Vorkov. Those who know, know that's a plus.

The Brains

Zombie Nation   red-marble vinyl reissue

(Cleopatra)

In addition to elating hedonistic wreckabouts everywhere, this 2010 Stomp Records release further credited Rene De La Muerte's vehicle as deserving of upswept stratum. (The group's rank having been established by three prior discs.) A digitally remastered incarnation has now been set loose by Cleopatra. Orange-and-blue flame-tongues rage toward night skies no less now than when initially kindled. Somewhere beneath soil exists a rumbustious club where the Brains are in neverending rotation.

Recommended: "We'll Rise," "We Gotta Go," "Screaming," "Apres Cette Nuit," "Sweeter than Wine," "As I Stand," "Zombie Nation," "Evil Never Dies," "Mexikaners," "Enjoy the Silence"

The Brains

Crazy Monster vinyl, digital, and compact disc

(Cleopatra)

With Crazy Monster, Canadian, moon-shadowed The Brains - wreckers of stages the world 'round - assume the status of genre masters. Necromancers who are always good for a fresh round. For years, of course, they've clawed toward lofty situation. And with each successive issuance, they've ascended nearer.

Now that Rene de la Muerte and his morbid accomplices have plunged their crimson-smeared marker into that topmost plateau, one anticipates unending cursedness. Oh, happy day.

Recommended: "Evil," "One More Time," "Feel No Pain," "Crazy Monster," "Candy Apple Red," "Darkness," "Shakey Queen," "The Blood is Warm"

The Brains

"Feel No Pain"   single

(Cleopatra)

"An undead nation with my favorite ghouls, this song was a blast to write!!," enthused front man Rene De La Muerte, per a Cleopatra blurb. "Getting back to old school Brains songs...I feel no pain!"

Scowling mates Gui Kitty and Colin the Dead abet Rene in realizing to a fearsome metric the rampage he'd dared to conceptualize when putting pen to paper. Wreckers will collide in delirium when this shard from imminent exhaustive disc Crazy Monster carves jaggedly into surrounding ether.
