Gina Haley & the Jive Aces

I've Got a Feelin'

A decade ago, Vintage Rock magazine described Jive Aces as the "UK's number one jive and swing band." That salute is no less merited, today; styling trademark yellow threads, they dish Swing magic and put rakishy-tipped stank on every College of Musical Knowledge note. A finer complement for brassy, emphatic Gina could not be located. The voluptuous, skirt-snapping girlchik looses steaming vocal torrents that pour atop and betwixt Lindy Hopping he's and she's. Spring-heeled rousers, torchers - all stations are visited. The killer-diller gal digs that, for jitterbugs on the thrashing floor and buzz-boys up in the blue, every day is a V for Victory one.

Manos Katsampoukas and the bop ministers at his side agitate gravels found in both select covers and originals that flip off road rules. "Just be careful not to blow yourself up, because this is Rockabilly dynamite!!," the Deutschland wild one declared, without a fraction of a shred of hyperbole. Formerly of Breathless, and with stacks of solo platters in his rear view, Manos has again carpentered Rebel tunes fit for any self-respecting Seeburg.

"Rock'n'Roll Machine" and "Rock'n'Roll" burst with such off-leash fervor, that "Coot Shoot Boogie" and "You Bring the Matches" pull one up short with their leisurely Country accents. And therein breathes distinction that touts the platter: Players involved are adept at distinct bents, their endeavors being colorful, rather than monochromatic. (Singer/plank-spanker Jesse Cunningham stands tall.) Hence doth victory arrive, chin high, shoulders back, and a bulging bag o' twang in each fist.

Bordeaux and Roquefort are not the only piquant exports issuing from Macron's countryside; this proudly hayseed bop also merits regard. The T Becker Combo mirror the magical moment Hillbilly and spring-heeled exercises fused in America's Eisenhower-era South. They render good-times with a rollicking backbeat identical to the one that induced calloused regular folks to make juke-joint floors creak as they picked 'em up and put 'em down.

1950's notoriety came to Texan Ray Campi when he waxed "Eager Beaver Boy." Similar regard is due Daryl - not only for his "Eager Cat," but also for its three grooved confederates. Assuming this stage are the rollicking bop natures that so vitalized plain-folks Country back in the day, that the whole world was fractured into franticness from which, hopefully, recovery will never arrive. Good ol' boys got the sock.

The leisurely range is where these Norwegian boppers can most often be located; that's the pace at which they ply good 'ol boy jukebox tunery. They've recorded crisp versions of smoldering numbers from their earlier live repertoire. Pontus J. Back

"Be en bön för mig" "Saliga visshet"

Finnish 'Rock Pastor' Pontus occupies an especial category, that of indefatigable guitar-rocker with eyes focused only on Eternal reward. While all of his efforts merit attention, these tracks work particular wonders in easily rolling vintage manners. The attractive melody of "Saliga visshet" may seem familiar; know that it is a brisk retelling of 1873 hymn "Blessed Assurance." There is crooning, there is bopping, and there is praise - one gets the whole package.
