Kellie Parr & Her SideCars

s/t

(PeaceFish Productions Inc)

It's wise to be wary of combos citing lodestars as disparate as Hank, Wanda Jackson, Blondie, and the Clash. But those contentions enjoy validity in the present instance, as quickly becomes apparent. Wonderfully free of lifted-nose airs, Kellie and the straightforward sparkplugs she's assembled submit carbonated performances that are shoes-off comfortable in both hay bale and citified circumstances.

Linus Zander

"Old Dusty Road" "End Of the Road"

(Zander Music)

In these limber-legged capers breathes substantiation of the conjecture that pumping-piano Rock'n'Roll is of evergreen charisma. (That is typical of Linus's diversions.) The Ferriday Fireball's shadow falls here, and better 88s-influence couldn't be sought. Good times sound like this.

John Miller and his Country Casuals

Losers Hall Of Fame

(Folk'n'Western Recording Co.)

Everyman John breaks biscuits with exemplary cohorts. These back-home hands not only respect America's real-folks tuneful traditions, but augment them with personal accentings that make for distinction. Besotted, melancholy cast-offs will find in this a kindred soul. But easeful charms also offer universal magnetism.

The Quakes

Western Bop

(Orrexx)

This mightiness sports seven-league creepers. Cemented as a vital Psychobilly unit, the Quakes shovel soil atop the fallacy that extended duration invariably engenders debility. (No one's informed Mick and Keith of that.) Paul Roman's authoritative Gretsch resonance remains the threesome's definitional component - his charged leads electrocute - just as his astute and witty songcraft yet captivates.

Paul recently wrote on Facebook that while the Phoenix-based combo has a drummer for several upcoming U.S. shows, a permanent, overseas tour-amenable skin-thrasher is yet desired. Should you or anyone of your acqaintance fit that description, reach out to the Quakes promptly.

Nik Flagstar and His Dirty Mangy Dogs

The Creepy Coupe vs. the Arkansas Chuggabug

(Paradigm Logic)

Courting mainstream palates is not Nik's objective. That's hardly a negative. His eccentric "Southern Gothic" tales are drawled against Honky Tonk airs and angry-guitar slashes that hurtle in wayward exhilaration. Know too that while Nik rhapsodizes about oddities, the man can spank that plank.

The Shakin' Suits

Shake, Shake, Shakin' Suits!  10" vinyl

(Plan 9 Trash Records)

Friskiness animates this sextet of Western Swing romps. Such are the unaffected tonal elegance and pleasantly innocent ambiance that one might think the post-1940s decades had never transpired. Each poised player wisely intuits that it's the whole, not the individual, that matters. They acquit themselves accordingly and whimsical melodiousness is the product. Rolling rhythms and genteel voicings transport listeners to a happy plane where troubles never tread.

Recommended: "I Like Coffee (Not For Me)," "When You See Me With My Baby," "Tweny-One," "Shake, Shake, Shakin' Suits!," "Merry-Go-Round," "Mali's Bounce"

Psychobilly Live & Rockin'

(Cherry Red Records)

No calculating the scores of quiffed barbarians who wrecked as these (mostly recorded live) agitations ricocheted. We are confronted by a document at once off-leash raucous and illustrative of an old-school era, one during which (at least, in clubs) scrupulousness was thrown curb-ward and boisterous abandon lusted after. These preserved blitzes and bellowings resound as forcibly today as when initially executed.
