Owen Mac
"Rockabilly Rebel" single
(Sharpe Music)
We can dispense with the notion that this 20 year-old Irishman is possessed of too technically sublime a voice to sing convincingly of rebellion. Do not mistake gentility for callowness; many unassuming exteriors mask burning souls. Impeccably melodious rendering allows for universal reception of an agreeably rollicking air borrowed from circa 1980 Matchbox.
As was true of so many 1950s shouters, Owen's background is in gospel (a calling he may again heed). But he got the sock This secular outing offers a lighthearted spiritedness of its own. Prominent is unleashed steel guitar. It buoys an already rousing proceeding, and lends healthy dollops of home-folks seasoning that welcomes listeners with ease. Kicking up one's heels needn't be pernicious.
I submit that Owen's flawlessness distinguishes this from fellows' recordings. Naysayers be damned.
