Psychotic Youth

Happy Songs

(Red West Production)

It's undestandable why some feel power pop is dismissable fluff. Some is. But when combined with flexed muscle, it can be irresistably bracing (see the Ramones). Many cuts here burst with vibrancy as elation zooms on meteoric wheels. Underlying hardness ensures that no song be insubstantial. Indeed, proper balance of buoyancy and steeliness -- not easy to formulate -- earns this disc status in the victors rank.

Recommended: "A New Plan," "Can This Be the One," "Out Of This World," "Can't Talk To That Girl," "I Don't Wanna Go Now," "Summer Days," "Drop In the Bucket," "High and Low," "You Are Complete"
