Sister Rosetta Tharpe

The Singles Collection, As and Bs 1939 - 1950

(Acrobat)

As Sister Rosetta's left hand took to the fretboard, praiseful convulsions, meticulous Holy paeans, and snapped-tight dartings made merry celebration. For her, filled with the Holy Ghost as she was, the guitar was but an extension of the Divine Glory that so enraptured her.

Understated Blues figures and seeds of ensuant Rock'n'Roll danced in her marvelous picking.

Salvational impression thrived in her full-throated and joyous singing, as well. She shouted delightful passion from above. Shaking with the Spirit, in emotional earthquake, Sister Rosetta poured forth happiness known to souls guaranteed eternal reward.

Sometime accompanists included Lucky Millinder and His Orchestra, Marie Knight, Sam Price, George "Pops" Foster, Walter Bishop, and Katie Bell Nubin,

Sister Rosetta would later gladden hearts internationally. And in 1998, she was one of four early and influential Gospel artists to be featured on collectors' stamps. The others were Mahalia Jackson, Clara Ward, and Roberta Martin.
