Slick River Rockets

That's Good Rockin'

(Crooked Creek Studios)

Folks on a first name basis with time clocks don't merely want bands like this - they need them. From Friday night on through the weekend, in a bar or social hall is where they party like forever teenagers. American musics that regular working stiffs crave (specifically, on-the-money Blues and Rock 'n' Roll with occasional Jazzy persuasion) are here proffered by players who, to a man, render each zazzed step just right under neon, Blue Ribbon-sign glow. (And Mickey was right: the girls do get prettier at closin' time.)

Recommended: "Shotgun," "Slick River Swing," "Hot and Saucy," "Too Old," "On the Riverside," "Trouble," "El Gato," "Rip it Up"

"Dimelo a la Cara"   digital single

(Beatclap)

Great sheets of angry chording cascade. Tempos alternate, instruments advance and recede, the main voice hectors, and gang shouts bust aside any dumb barriers. Riffing can shatter kneecaps. Spain's in flames.

Astro Zombies

Pre-Early Years   10"

(JANGR)

A gnarled finger hits Rewind. Speakers spew bare-boned 1996  cacophony, amid which are melded scraps of young Presley, Lawrence Talbot, and spiky, upstart, torn t-shirt legions. Two unissued slices lurk. The sound of street youth at liberty, rash yarns in their craws. To the degree demos can foreshadow celebrated cheeky curiosities, such is the matter in these 7 specimena. (Limited to 200 numbered discs.)

Recommended: "Astro Zombies Are Coming," "Vampire," "Magnetic Man," "The Mega Wave"

Los Vampiros

s/t   10"

(SNAP!!)

Speakers will blow to tatters, given the straight-out forcefulness of the Zaragoza four's reading of Charlie's immortal "Break Up." The muscular saxophone in strong evidence struts throughout successive numbers. Featured are a 1914 Jose Padilla paso doble (during which intoxicating talents are paraded), corrido articulation, and Classic Rock 'n' Roll owed to a storied duck-walker and a sideburned former truck driver. All leap to declare jurisdiction in tones unconditional. Conclusive cut "Mírame" is an accordian-laced romper whose propulsion gains vital thrust from spirited harmonica and group singalonging that evokes cantina merriment.

Recommended: "Break Up," "Vampiros!," "Flaming Star," "El Relicario," "Forty Days," "Look at Me"

Gina Haley & the Jive Aces

I've Got a Feelin'

(El Toro)

A decade ago, Vintage Rock magazine described Jive Aces as the "UK's number one jive and swing band." That salute is no less merited, today; styling trademark yellow threads, they dish Swing magic and put rakishy-tipped stank on every College of Musical Knowledge note. A finer complement for brassy, emphatic Gina could not be located. The voluptuous, skirt-snapping girlchik looses steaming vocal torrents that pour atop and betwixt Lindy Hopping he's and she's. Spring-heeled rousers, torchers - all stations are visited. The killer-diller gal digs that, for jitterbugs on the thrashing floor and buzz-boys up in the blue, every day is a V for Victory one.

Recommended: "I've Got a Feelin'," "'Til the Well Runs Dry," "Mama He Treats Your Daughter Mean," "Them There Eyes," "Teardrops from My Eyes," "As Long As I'm Moving," "Saved"

Rockin' Aldo

Rocker to the bone

(Rebel Music Records)

One hardly need wait 'til track 20 - a chain-swinging cover of Cavan's 1982 "Hey Teenager" - to dig Aldo's blood-affinity with finger-popping drapes who march shoulder-to-shoulder along cobbled boulevards. All tunes preceding throw out identifiers: solid downbeats, twangs of mixed Hillbilly/Blues parentage, concise architectures that alternately cruise, swing, and stomp. Atop all that strides a man whose no-compromise delivery and Rebel posture indicate he swallows handfuls of Bop Pills when e'er the little red rooster crows.

Recommended: "Be Bop Baby," "Crazy Bop Boogie,"  "Rocker to the Bone," "Singular Woman," "I'm Gonna Tell on You," "My Love for You," "Red-Hot Mama," "Leave This Old Town," "Rockin' Guitar Man," "Both Wheels Left the Ground," "Rock 'n' Roll Will Never Die," "Hey Teenager"

Generador

"Yipi yipi hey!!"   digital single

(Snap Records)

Culled from 2024 EP Queremos diversión. J.Horror and Annie Baby bend Chan Romero's "Hippy Hippy Shake" all out of shape. But it's a cool & crazy silhouette, one from within which the duo projects mondo distorto, hotwired voicebox, and percussive devastation. Enough squalling to make dervishes of every slap-and-tickle pairing six feet under Lovers Lane.
