Punk busts wide university, gallery

Per one Tennessee ABC TV affiliate, Middle Tennessee State University now houses "the world's largest collection of Punk records."

Danny Dean schlepped details: "This is the Tim Yohan collection. I believe he was the creator of Maximum Rock 'n' Roll magazine, and also the radio show up in the San Francisco / Berkeley area.

"(I got to interview on his radio show two times back when I was a teenager, when we would play up in San Francisco. We actually played the first ever US Punk festival there, I think in '81. I have a flyer.)"

For his part, erstwhile Black Flag singer Henry Rollins plans a free, two-day "Cool Evidence" Nashville exhibit. Shown will be items from Rollins' own collection -- including records, flyers, and other artifacts -- that document Washington, DC's 1970s/'80s Punk scene.

"An incredible amount of time, effort, and expenditure has gone into this," Henry wrote on the Radar 615 Gallery's site. "I've either got it extremely right, or catastrophically wrong!"

He continued. "For many years, I've been fascinated with historical markers. Physical objects that still remain years after they were created, become irrefutable evidence of time and place. Memories fade, and retelling of facts often leads to distortion. However, the genuine article remains unperturbed."

One report holds that Henry's Cool Evidence exhibit "serves as a precursor or showcase related to his larger archive and eventual plans for a broader Punk museum/archive."

Danny shared an inside recollection: "Back when [Henry] moved to LA in the early '80s to sing for Black Flag, I used to see him skateboarding down the street. He was just an angry young skinhead kid. He sure has come a long way."

"On display will be things from the 70s-80s Washington DC music scene," Henry wrote. "Tour posters and photos of Black Flag, the Damned, the Cramps, from Lux and Ivy’s personal collection, Iggy Pop, the Stooges and more."
