D.D. Kid Combo single
"Bad Luck Baby"  b/w "Goodbye Baby"
(Martin's Garage Records)

D.D. Kid gives out with fiercely authentic, profoundly blues-grounded rock and roll. At once, it seems from an earlier moment and belies his youth. His rightly skeletal Combo has his back.

Recommended: "Goodbye Baby," "Bad Luck Baby"

Mojo Men From Mars
Target: Earth
(Martin's Garage Records)

Don't fall for everything vintage drive-in cinema shows. Not all fantastic voyages amongst planets proceed without perturbance. From within this five-track Croatian package, marvelous in its implications, bound innumerable swipes and swerves of eruptive, exotic spectacle. Put succinctly: It's a gas.

Imagine a search-and-destroy garage switchblading betwixt star showers.

Recommended: "System Child," "Hard To Love," "Ducktape Blues," "Blood," "Wasted Life"

Thee Deacons
Cadillac King
(Casino Records)

Richie, Buddy, Joey, Eugene, and Perry would've dug this chin-up, true-blue rockabilly, thrown out with fever aplenty. Even Turkey would've gotten on the floor of the Bronx House Valentine's Dance.

Recommended: "Memphis Stomp," "Cadillac King," "Chadookie Doo," "Lazy Dasie," "Live For the Moment," "Bamma Lama Loo"

Binky Philips and the Planets
Splitsville Or Bust
Leave Me Hanging
(self)

Binky Philips and the Planets refuse to go gentle into the good night Thomas wrote of. And that accrues tremendously to our  benefit.

Band personnel has changed, over decades. Binky Philips and the Planets began in the 1970s NYC pre-punk scene as simply "The Planets." Today, Philips and the Planets share two distinctions: hurtling rockers of mustn't-miss capacity and the only CBGB's/Max's Kansas City band to go unsigned. (Back in the day, a likely deal with Warner Brothers fell through amidst fractious negotiations.)

They've watched as NY bands like the Ramones and Kiss, with whom they shared stages, went on to record and enjoy considerable international successes.

This electrifying new single manifests all the elements that long made Binky Philips and the Planets an indispensable NYC rock and roll phenomenon: Manic, unstoppable guitars, economical arrangement, a backbeat that cannot be denied, and, in center spotlight, Binky himself.

Once a devout kid who believed fully in the music's promise, he is now a grown man who still hefts high the declarative torch and rocks out like the wholly devoted first infantryman of an assault force for whom complete and gratifying conquest is the only cause.

In his ten-story voice, all the joyfulness and storm of true rock and roll blast with omni-directional consequence. And a guitar, in his hands, realizes its wonderfully fearsome potential.

The two tracks linked below are from a full album to be issued later this month.

In a release, Binky said:“Over many years, I have written about ten albums worth of songs. None of them ever got past the demo stage. Perhaps, rightly so. It's fitting that The Planets' first ever true full-blown-production album, 'Established 1972 NYC', is comprised of the best songs I have ever written. The brand of music we play could be called Unhyphenated Rock. It's straight up. It's hard. It's real. We are not Pop. We are not Metal. We are not Punk. We are not Retro. We are Rock and Roll.”

JLT: John Lindberg Trio
Straight From the Heart
(Cosmos / Enviken)

Legendary Swedish rock and rollers with fire in their bellies and enough out-loud passion to send entire passels of prudes scurrying for salvatory cover. Too modern for museums, but with so much regard for yesterday seething beneath skin that it jumps up all cat-clothed and smacks unwary Clydes clean 'cross the hardwood.

Recommended: "This Is What You Get," "Straight From the Heart," "You Belong To Me," "Forever," "Double Talking," "Johnny Got a Tommy Gun"

Thee Scarecrows AKA
Ten Heads Are Better Than One
(Rub-A-Chicken Records)

.
No, swerving, drawled harmonica isn't common to psychobilly. Perhaps that's partly why it succeeds admirably and locates Thee Scarecrows far afield from more orthodox, guitar-grinding psycho.

Sure, that's present in abundance. So are pounded-out rhythms and gravelly yowls.

But dug up and tossed freely is a raging psycho hulk stitched liberally from the hillbilly and blues musics that mattered decades before angry kids took razors to their skulls.

Recommended: "Ten Heads Are Better Than One," "Somebody's Diggin' My Potatoes," "Scarecrow Man," "You Got Your Head On Backwards, Baby," "Straw Headed Man," "Hey Ho, Let's Ho!"

The Star Time Playboys
It's Star Time with...
(Martin's Garage Records)

Instrumental selections of gentle melodiousness in which pellucid, eminently tasteful tones shine in understated gleam. The beat, eyebrows arched, paces with measured sagacity.

Recommended: "Sugar Cube," "Red Rose Rag," "Don't Wait," "Swingin' With Zotel," "Barnyard Bop," "Starless Night"
