The Hangmen
Stories To Tell
(Acetate Records)
This magnetic opus embodies rich and developed artfulness. The Hangmen's sound is of a piece with those of established rock luminaries, true. (One does sometimes recall the Gun Club.) But as is ever the case, it's what is done with influences that determines whether one contributes efforts meriting notice or is merely an imitator with no originality. And the Hangmen bring to the table a unique oeuvre that deserves recognition for its own merits. Theirs is a wide-ranging, guitar-dominant presentation whose sweep and relatable everyman vocals situate this effort on an intriguing plane.
Do not confuse this group with the UK Psychobilly trio of the same name. Based in Los Angeles, these Hangmen shared an early 2023 US/Canada tour bill with the Supersuckers and are presently criss-crossing Europe, treating audiences there to selections from this and previous recordings.
